Inspired by haute couture, history, and salvaged materials, San Francisco artist emiko oye creates urban jewelry from one-of-a-kind art pieces to her ready-to-wear emiko-o line. Utilizing non-traditional materials such as industrial scrap, discarded plastics, and LEGO® in combination with semi-precious metals and gemstones, her works strive to subtly transform the identity of everyday mundane objects to create new dialogues about our relationships with the environment and our culture. Active in the Bay Area art community, she is Co-President of the Metal Arts Guild, gives lectures on how to survive as an artist, and facilitates community recycled jewelry projects through her Accessorize with Toys workshops.
She has been featured in 21st Century Jewelry: The Best of the 500 Series, Fabulous Jewelry from Found Objects, and The Art of Jewelry: Plastic & Resin, as well as Metalsmith Magazine’s Exhibition in Print, American Craft, ReadyMade, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Major museums that have exhibited her work: Museum of Arts & Design, NY; Schmuckmuseum, Germany; Museum of Contemporary Craft, OR; Museum of Craft + Design, SF; Society of Arts & Crafts, MA, Toledo Museum of Art, OH.
